Historic Bridge Survey
Historic bridges are an important part of West Virginia’s history. Bridges teach us about engineering history, but also tell us stories about the people who use them and are important landmarks within Georgia’s communities. The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) has commissioned Mead & Hunt to identify and document historic bridges throughout the state that have an important connection to a historical activity, association, or event. WVDOH has already conducted several past inventories of historic bridges, which are being updated and supplemented by the current effort. The current survey is looking at bridges built between 1965 and 1980. Your input can help us find and better understand historic bridges!
Some questions to consider:
- Why is the bridge important to the history of your area? For example, a local bridge may have served as a gateway to a community or created access to nearby commercial areas or recreational parks.
- Do any bridges in your area have interesting historical associations? For example, a bridge was the site of a local celebration, parade, protest, or historical event.
For each bridge, please provide specific location and historical information where possible. We welcome copies of newspaper articles, historic sources, and photos that you may have.
